Jumbo (1843 Amsterdam)
In 1853, German salesman Engelbert Hausemann founded a small shop in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The business flourished and in 1860 Wilhelm Hötte joined the company. Between 1873 and 1882 he worked independent for his own company. Both companies merged and became Hausemann & Hötte.
Initially toys formed a minor part of their collection. The first toy that the Jumbo brand started to carry was the wooden toy that was imported from Germany in the early 1930s. The solid toys ushered in a new era. The realisation grew that children learn through play and that toys contribute to education and development. The demand for good and responsible toys grew. In addition to the wooden Jumbo toys, the collection included dolls in all conceivable shapes and sizes, as well as trains from Hornby and Dinky Toys, both from the Meccano factory.
In 1947 the first brochure with Jumbo games was published. The first game on the first page was Don't get annoyed! (Mens Erger Je Niet!). Other titles from that time were: Hamertje Tik, Ganzenbord and Pim Pam Pet. In addition to the range of games, Meccano and Schuco in particular were the brands that generated the turnover.
From 1956 on, Jumbo jigsaw puzzles and board games were manufactured in their own factory, the Nederlandse Spelfabriek. Successful introductions were Electro, Stratego and Deal or No Deal.
The famous logo of Jumbo was introduced in 1936. The name is based on Jumbo, the flying elephant. They wanted their toys to be so strong that an elephant could step on them. It is known in different variations (with HH in it) and different colours, including blue (1950s -1960s). Only since the late 60s, the Jumbo logo is red, as we know it today.
In 1978 Hausemann & Hötte acquired the designation 'Royal'. In 2003 the company was bought by ABN Amro Capital. Two years later, it was sold to the management, supported by Berk Partners. Since 2006, Koninklijke Jumbo is located in an old industrial building in Zaandam, formerly used by Verkade (chocolates).
